John Wesley Hunt papers, 1796-1942 (bulk 1816-1832).

The papers include a letter from Major John Crittenden, father of John J. Crittenden, concerning unspecified business, and four letters from John H. Hanna, Hunt's son-in-law who was associated with Hunt in business. Three of Hanna's letters concern the Bank of the United States. Also present is a 1796 letter from Frankfort tavernkeeper Daniel Weisiger concerning business with the Abijah Hunt firm. There is also an 1832 announcement of the commencement of business of a new firm, Davis and Hanson, in Philadelphia. The collection also has a 1942 letter from author and book dealer John Wilson Townsend concerning part of this collection, which he sold to the Kentucky Historical Society.

John Wesley Hunt was a noted merchant, financier, and horseman of Lexington, Kentucky. Hunt was born in New Jersey, the son of a Trenton merchant. As an adult, Hunt first moved to Richmond, Virginia as a partner in a business of general merchandise. He later went into shipping in Norfolk. In 1816, the Bank of the United States was rechartered, the first charter having expired in 1811, in an attempt to stabilize the national currency. Within the first three years, the bank was nearly ruined due to mismanagement. Langdon Cheves was elected president of its board of directors in 1819 and restored the bank's credit.
